Publication Design
Print is not dead. Especially in education. Publication design is one of the foremost methods of teaching linear or sequential design. Linear design is a key principle in many non-print areas of the design industry such as motion graphics and web design where the audience’s (or user) interaction or experience must be finely crafted.
Publication Projects
At USM all of our graphic communication (Junior and Senior level) and typography (Sophomore level) courses include a publication design component in order to give our students the necessary experience in linear design and typography.
The examples below are from several different projects from those courses which include: annual reports, covid journals, survival guides and complete typography textbooks (textbooks are completely student generated from notes and course projects).
Projects
- Zines (Junior & Senior)
- Annual Reports (Junior & Senior)
- Covid Journal (Junior & Senior)
- Survival Guide (Junior & Senior)
- Typography Textbook (Sophomore)
Zine: Think Less Do More
A different take on a portfolio. This project was completed for a special problems course that was an advanced course in design software. For the final the student was asked to convey the information they learned in the course while also expressing their relationship with the software and our graphic design program.
Annual Reports
This classic project teaches students how to expand branding principles in a publication format. This project also expands on previously covered principles such as pacing, binding, and typographical layout and hierarchy.
Survival Guide
This project like the annual report teaches previously covered principles such as pacing, binding, and typographical layout and hierarchy while also working to create a more “helpful” or “how to” form of graphic communication.
COVID Journals
Design in the time of COVID. Design students across the globe are facing the monumental task of living in a pandemic and trying to complete a college degree in a notoriously difficult major. This project allows students to express their plight while also learning the principles of publication.
